ife, they say, is about the journey not the destination. John MacCalman has lived such a life and his autobiography,I’m Quirky, reads like a travelogue in which the author is as fascinated by the airlines as he is by the places they take him to. And, boy, does he go places. From his home in Glasgow he takes off on trips to New York, Los Angeles, Thailand and Australia, among others. Along the way he takes advantage of every perk and discount scheme available. At one point he wonders if he had actually bankrupted one airline with his enthusiasm for freebies. But if this book is a romance then John has multiple loves. Radio and music are what keeps his feet on the ground when his head is not in the clouds. We hear about his work with Radio Clyde and his quasi management role with the kind of bands who once pulled in the crowds at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove bandstand. But it’s in the first class seats of jet planes where he seems most at home. Until, that is, he finds himself racing against time to outrun Covid shutdowns in Australia as he tries to hitch a flight back to Scotland. Does our hero make it back safely or does that sniffling man on the transfer bus thwart his plans? You’ll have to read this quirky book to find out.
